Aims

  • The research aims first of all to provide a visualization of the material spatiality of land use and settlement as resulting from – similar or different – perceptions of natural space in two physically different medieval geographical contexts, i.e. the southernmost part of the Balkan Peninsula and Asia Minor (including their insular areas) during the 6th-13th centuries.
  • The main objective is to provide a compilation of data to use not as a reference book but as a contextualized evaluation of textual and archaeological evidence with a specific interdisciplinary approach and postmodern theoretical orientation.
  • Other objectives are to promote the study of Byzantine Settlement and enrich its theoretical orientation by means of publishing, teaching relevant courses in both Hosting Foundations and engaging postgraduate researchers into the research projects.
